SPACING
Positive space is the focal area of the artwork, and negative space is the space around the focal point. Negative space and positive space are always present in a composition. It allows us to find balance in the image when arranged correctly.
Composition is the way in which different elements of an artwork are arranged. We have complete freedom when choosing the composition of how we want the artwork to be hung. Elements may all be clustered towards the centre of the wall, or spread out in various ways.
The key to art looking good is about how we hang them strategically. Create consistent spacing between each artwork. Start with 2″ inches and add more info needed. Try to avoid hanging a small frame on a large wall and a large frame on a small wall. When there is a substantial negative space that over power the positive, the design becomes unbalanced, vice versa.
ART HANGING
The rule of thumb to hanging artwork is to keep the midpoint approximately 62″ above the floor consistently throughout the home. If it’s a collection of art then you need to hang the collection as one piece. The center piece should be eye level or 62 inches from floor and the remaining artwork that surrounds should be spaced accordingly. Arrange all your artwork on the floor before hanging to have a better visual. Understand spacing and use it to your advantage. Your guest will appreciate it!
